New and inviting university library
University of Bergen, UiB, was founded in 1948 as a continuation of Bergen Museum’s library. In 1961 the library moved into a new building designed by the architects Kaare Kvilhaug and Jo Svare. In 2005 an extensive refurbishment was carried out and today the building appears with three floors, which provide space for workplaces, magazines and books. The entrance and exterior of the building are listed.
In connection with the move of the university's image collection to temperate storage on the lower floor, the library has been renewed. The building's large amount of daylight and comfortable space make students want to use the library for studies. The number of study places has now increased by 100 to 340 places.
In the interior design, in addition to practical study spaces, emphasis has been placed on creating small, cozy seating groups. A large dissemination area allows for different types of exhibitions and provides easy access to information searches.
Several of the library furniture are kept in calm colors that match the wall color and provide a good contrast to the rest of the interior.
