From canteen to new library

In the heart of Billund – a town known as the home of the LEGO Group and for its strong tradition of creativity and learning – the International School of Billund has gained a new library that brings pupils together across cultures and year groups. With children from all over the world, the library plays a central role as a place where calm, concentration and curiosity come together in an inspiring environment.

The new library has been created in a former canteen area, which has undergone a complete refurbishment and now stands as a modern and functional 250 m² learning space. The aim was to design a library that would act as the heart of the school: a place pupils choose to spend time simply because they want to.

The interior is shaped by flexibility and variation. ‘Rooms within the room’ offer spaces where pupils can work in groups, retreat into reading caves or engage in creative activities at makerspace tables. The choice of materials draws inspiration from the colours and forms of nature. Wood, warm earth tones and organic lines create a calm foundation that allows the books to stand out. The 60/30 Classic shelving is seamlessly integrated into wooden elements, giving the space a coherent aesthetic. Playful, characterful lighting fixtures enhance the atmosphere and support the school’s creative spirit.

The library at the International School of Billund is a vibrant learning environment where design, functionality and atmosphere come together beautifully. The project demonstrates how a library can become the natural gathering point of a school – a place where children and young people are inspired to learn, read and stay curious.
