International School of Billund

A global hub

International School of Billund in Denmark is located in the town known worldwide as the home of the LEGO Group – a global epicentre of creativity, play, and learning. As an IB World School with pupils and families from many different countries and cultures, its educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that creativity, curiosity and collaboration are fundamental drivers of learning.

In such an environment, the library plays a distinctive role: it must be academically grounded yet open, inspiring and safe. A place where pupils meet across cultures, languages and skill levels – and where they can find both calm and community.

From canteen to new library

At the International School of Billund, a former canteen has been transformed into a welcoming and vibrant library. Natural materials, carefully considered interior design and flexible furniture solutions combine to create a learning environment that encourages tranquillity, curiosity and academic immersion.

When the school sought to rethink how pupils encounter literature and learning, the vision for a new library emerged – a library that would become the heart of the school. Our Danish team provided consultancy and design expertise and reshaped the existing premises entirely. The result is a contemporary 250 m² library where children and young people naturally gravitate towards concentration, inspiration and shared experiences.

The focus has been to create a library that invites calm, immersion and a joy of reading – and which works well for our pupils and staff in everyday life,” says Camilla Uhre Fog, Head of School.

The new library at the International School of Billund spans approximately 250 m².

Rooms within the room

A library for every need

The library is used daily by pupils across all school ages, making flexibility essential. From the outset, it was clear that the project required more than new furnishings. Walls, floors, ceilings and installations were removed to create the best possible foundation for a new environment.

We designed ‘rooms within the room’ – zones that allow pupils to sit together, work in groups or retreat into reading caves. Makerspace tables support creative, hands-on activities, while other areas are dedicated to peace and concentration.

Through the use of screens, shelving systems and different lighting, multiple groups can use the library simultaneously – without disturbing one another. Thoughtful acoustic solutions and intelligent spatial planning allow activity and focus to coexist beautifully.

Camilla adds: “The best thing is the atmosphere: it feels safe, warm and welcoming. The pupils love it, and it truly encourages both reading and being there.”

A touch of nature

Earth tones and nature-inspired furniture

The redesigned library forms a coherent, flowing space where light, material choices and proportions work elegantly together. Materials and colours were carefully selected to define the overall expression. Warm earth tones and natural materials create a gentle and inviting atmosphere, allowing the books themselves to become the colourful focal point. Wood is the primary material – used in shelving, tables and end wall panels – giving the space a tactile and calming foundation.

The interior includes:

  • Custom-built wooden shelving and reading nooks
  • Flexible seating and poufs
  • Selected third-party pieces such as Softline poufs, Fora Form tables and Chatboard boards
  • 60/30 Classic shelving, seamlessly integrated into wooden elements for a unified aesthetic

Lighting also plays a decisive role. Playful luminaires add character and soften the calm, understated expression – without compromising the tranquillity of the room. The result is a holistic environment where function and aesthetics merge.

A vibrant learning environment

Expertise in school libraries

We have many years of experience creating inspiring spaces for school libraries. We know how to design environments that support learning, play and curiosity – and where both pupils and staff thrive in their daily routines.

The redevelopment of the library at the International School of Billund exemplifies our holistic approach – from initial sketches to the finished space. We designed, supplied and installed all furnishings and interior elements. Our aim was to create a library that works effortlessly every day, inspires learning, community and reading pleasure, and upholds an aesthetic that will last for years to come.

“We chose to collaborate with Lammhults Biblioteksdesign A/S because they listened closely to our needs and quickly understood what we wanted – both practically and pedagogically. The collaboration has been open, reassuring and highly professional, with excellent dialogue throughout,” says Camilla.
