A vibrant hub

The Library @TheLightbox, Barnsley opened to the public on 13th July 2019 and welcomed over 6000 visitors. The feedback from the client and the users has been incredible. Thedesignconcept were awarded the contract to design and fit out the library after a tough tender selection process.

We worked closely with Henry Boot Construction and Barnsley Council to create an ultra-modern facility which now offers more services than conventional libraries. A lab on the ground floor will be used to promote interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and be the venue for coding classes.

The library itself will also act as a multi-purpose venue for events of all sizes, workshops and activities. With automated book lending, staff are free to complete other tasks and to provide any information visitors may require.
There is a ‘quiet room’ for those who suffer from conditions such as autism, where a table with projector encourages some game-play and creates a calming atmosphere.

In a time where library investment is low and risk of closure high, the library @TheLightbox is a welcome piece of good news and has created a cornerstone for the city of Barnsley.
