Embrace democracy

Schulz Speyer - 70 years of designing for democracy

Since Schulz Speyer’s inception in 1955, our company has been at the forefront of library design, shaping spaces that embody democratic values. As Schulz Speyer prepares for the upcoming Bibliothekskongress in Bremen, Germany 24th-27th June 2025, we are excited to unveil our latest innovations in library design under the theme "Democracy". Bibliothekskongress is an annual congress that serves as a pivotal gathering for librarians, architects and industry leaders to discuss the evolving role of libraries in society.

At Schulz Speyer and our companies alike, we are deeply committed to designing libraries that embody democratic ideals. For us, democracy within library spaces means creating environments that are accessible to all, regardless of background or status. Libraries serve as vital community hubs where individuals can access knowledge freely, engage in dialogue and participate in cultural activities. By designing spaces that foster inclusivity and accommodate diverse needs, we empower libraries to serve as catalysts for social cohesion and democratic engagement.

Design stand

Our layout for Bibliothekskongress 2025

In the lead-up to the exhibition, our talented design team at Schulz Speyer embarked on a journey of brainstorming sessions and detailed 3D renderings to envision the perfect exhibition stand for Bibliothekskongress 2025. In the design process, we could draw inspiration from the way we have previously prepared for conferences - including BiblioCon.

The centrepiece of our stand is a meticulously and colourful designed back wall, vividly illustrating our support for societal inclusiveness and democratic principles within library spaces. Complementing this back wall, our furniture selections at the stand are elegantly crafted in white and neutral tones, creating a striking contrast and reinforcing the colourful and democratic theme of the exhibition.

Elegantly integrated into the stand are the Lingo Shelving, offering modern functionality and aesthetic appeal, alongside the Basket chair, designed to foster collaborative and relaxed reading spaces. Moreover, our diverse range of Fora Form seating solutions enhances comfort and functionality, while the Felix newspaper and magazine stick creates cozy reading corners, promoting engagement with print media. Complementing these elements are our sleek acrylic displays, which elegantly showcase library resources.

This year's theme

Promoting mental health and community engagement

The theme "Democracy" at Bibliothekskongress 2025 resonates deeply with the principles of mental health and community well-being. As library designers, we bear a significant responsibility in fostering democracy and supporting mental health through our designs.

As we delved into the intricacies of designing our stand for Bibliothekskongress, our focus was to encourage community activities and social cohesion through the design but also create inclusive spaces where diverse voices are heard and valued. Community activities are more than just gatherings; they are vital interventions that foster connection, reduce isolation and provide a sense of purpose. For many individuals, libraries represent a safe space where they can engage in activities that nurture their mental health. These activities range from book clubs and workshops to mindfulness sessions and support groups, each offering unique benefits.

The integration of mental health considerations is a permanent part of our design philosophy and a democratic practice that we have transferred to our stand at Bibliothekskongress 2025. Through thoughtful design choices, we strive to empower libraries as democratic institutions that not only provide knowledge but also promote social equity and mental resilience.

A place for all

Together or individually

Besides being social hubs, libraries also serve as sanctuaries where individuals can find tranquility and solace amidst the bustle of daily life. At Bibliothekskongress 2025, we showcase a reading cave /room within the room inside the Lingo shelving, where removing the table and chair creates a secluded area for personal reflection. This design not only promotes a sense of peace but also underscores our commitment to supporting mental well-being within communities.

Creating quiet zones within libraries is integral to our approach, as highlighted in our exploration of relaxation zones and design principles. These spaces provide opportunities for introspection and rejuvenation, essential for maintaining mental health in today's fast-paced world. We believe that fostering such environments contributes not only to individual well-being but also to the broader societal goal of promoting mental resilience and a balanced lifestyle.

Explore more about quiet zones and relaxation-focused designs as we continue to innovate in library design that supports both community engagement and personal rejuvenation.

Knowledge and democracy

Newspaper and magazine zones

On our stand at Bibliothekskongress 2025, visitors can explore firsthand how newspaper and magazine zones contribute to democratic ideals. The inclusion of designated reading areas for newspapers and our featured product Felix newspaper and magazine stick provide a practical solution for organizing and displaying periodicals, enhancing accessibility and reader engagement.

Creating dedicated newspaper and magazine zones within libraries plays a pivotal role in fostering democracy by promoting informed citizenry and facilitating diverse perspectives. The inclusion of designated reading areas for newspapers and magazines encourages people to engage critically with current affairs. The Newspaper and Magazine Zone, highlighted in our exhibition, showcases how thoughtful design can create inviting spaces for intellectual exploration and community interaction.
