Colchester Library
A picture-perfect finish! The Revamp of Colchester Library is here
Closing in September 2024, the long-awaited reopening of Colchester Library marks an exciting new chapter for the local community. Following a comprehensive refurbishment, Essex County Council has created an inspiring learning hub that offers increased bookstock and renewed opportunities for discovery. The transformation reimagines a much-loved space as a destination for intellectual growth, creativity, and play.
We believe a modern library is more than the beauty of books lining the shelves. It’s about thoughtfully blending the digital and diverse world we live in today with the enduring value of traditional learning environments. With this in mind, our design uplift of Colchester Library boost over 11,000 visitors in the first ten days since reopening.
A Sensory Sensation
At the heart of the refurbishment is a space designed for everyone; a central pillar of the community aligned with the Everyone’s Library Service 2022–2026 strategy. To reflect Colchester’s vibrant community, the imagination space was re-envisioned as an equally dynamic area for exploration and activity. With a £337,500 grant thanks to the department for Culture, Media, and Sport (Arts Council England), the Imagination Space design concept was able to come to life.
This engaging environment features a range of interactive elements designed to stimulate curiosity and learning, including fibre optic strands for tactile interaction and projected games for visual engagement. A playful shopfront encourages children of all ages to develop early mathematical and communication skills through imaginative play.
From climbing through the treehouse and peering through its windows, to boarding the bespoke animal rescue bus or building in the repair shop, the forest-themed setting offers something for everyone. Whether exploring structures or enjoying the soft play area, the space blends entertainment with education seamlessly.
Design Focus
The design process for this project was approached with care and attention to detail. Reimagining a classic library into an inclusive, future-focused space was central to our designers’ vision. Every corner was carefully considered, resulting in a design that is both visually engaging and highly functional. Accessibility was a key driver throughout, with layouts and furniture solutions designed to support DDA compliance, buggy access, and neurodiverse visitors who benefit from clear zoning and sensory-aware environments with smooth circulation.
Three key areas formed the focus of the refurbishment: the ground floor, the imagination space, and the literacy centre. Throughout these zones, essential design elements such as colour detailing, wayfinding signage, graphics, and biophilic features were introduced to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The transformation begins with the books themselves, showcased using the Lingo Shelving System with open fillet connections and timber display ends, reinforcing a sense of freshness and renewal. The new shelving also accommodates an additional 3,000 titles, significantly expanding the existing collection.
Study in Style
At the core of every design is the understanding that knowledge builds stronger communities. Supporting both study and learning was essential to creating a user-friendly environment. Colchester Library now offers everything from quick-pick displays for casual browsing to cosy, quiet corners for focused work.
Stand-alone display podiums and children’s browsing units are strategically placed throughout the library, reinforcing accessibility and encouraging exploration, while maintaining a sense of completeness with a linear design to the Imagination Space. A variety of thoughtfully designed study settings, from individual pods to shared tables, which allow for both solo and group study. Upgraded furniture, improved layouts, and inviting book nooks enhance comfort and usability throughout the space.
Designed Sustainability for a Responsible Future
Sustainable sourcing and production are central to our design philosophy, and Colchester Library reflects our commitment to responsible design. By prioritising environmentally conscious materials and processes without compromising on quality or aesthetics, the refurbished library supports a greener future while revitalising a vital community hub.
Flawless Finishes
The finishing details bring the entire design together. Carefully selected fabrics, textures, and graphics add depth and character throughout the space. Acknowledging this aids in supporting mental wellbeing. Access to natural materials, biophilic design elements, calming colour palettes, and varied acoustic environments creates a space that feels restorative as well as functional.
Pops of colour and layered textures enhance visual interest, while custom upholstery features across furniture, shelving, and bespoke elements elevate the overall design. Graphic finishes integrated into shelving and children’s furniture boost creativity and energy, particularly within the forest-themed imagination space; home to friendly characters like Fuzzlehog.
Visitors can settle into the children’s study area beneath quotes from inspiring creative thinkers such as Walt Disney, or relax with a book in custom armchairs, surrounded by the words of R. David Lankes. Together, these thoughtful touches complete a library designed to inspire, engage, and welcome everyone.
Repurposed Furniture

Access to natural materials, biophilic design elements, calming colour palettes, and varied acoustic environments creates a space that feels restorative as well as functional.
We know Essex council holds environmentally friendly public spaces at the forefront of their revamp, thus we worked collectively with them to produce a new look to older shelving that projected a necessary uplift, by adding new cladding to the existing frame.
