Where history meets magic

The grand reopening of the historic Grade II-listed Chorlton Library marks the completion of an ambitious refurbishment that brings new life to one of Manchester’s most cherished buildings. Originally opened in 1914 as a generous gift from the renowned Scottish American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the library now blends heritage with innovation in a truly inspiring transformation.

As part of the restoration, long-hidden architectural features were rediscovered and carefully preserved. The stunning 10.8-metre-high dome in the library's entrance – once concealed – now stands as a magnificent centrepiece, flooding the space below with natural light. The reintroduction of the original mezzanine gallery has further revitalised the entrance, reconnecting visitors with the building’s past. Historic tiles and ornamental lettering, previously hidden for decades, have been delicately restored, offering a window into the library’s rich legacy.

The removal of partitions and reconfiguration of the layout enabled a seamless blend of classic and contemporary design. We used a heritage-inspired colour palette which complements the historic fabric while introducing a calm and cohesive aesthetic. The preserved feature signage, now fully visible, helps guide visitors naturally through the space, enhancing the clarity and flow of the layout.

Adaptability and user-focused functionality were central to the design vision. The free-flowing layout supports flexible use, with multiple breakout zones that cater to a range of activities – from quiet reading to social interaction. Thoughtfully placed fluted and cocoon seating creates pockets of comfort and calm throughout. Generous study spaces offer access to PCs as well as Bring Your Own Devices spaces to support both focused learning and collaborative work.

The entrance foyer has been designed with a minimalist approach to allow the spectacular dome to remain the undisputed focal point. At its centre, a set of display units – echoing the dome’s octagonal geometry – sit on castors for easy repositioning, allowing for dynamic use of the space without compromising sightlines.

A Magical World for Young Explorers
The children’s library offers a truly enchanting experience. Designed to spark imagination and encourage learning, it’s a vibrant and playful space filled with bold colours, engaging graphics, and bespoke furniture. At its heart lies a captivating, jungle-themed play zone, featuring a custom-built interactive treehouse complete with climbing structures, a sensory den, and a thrilling slide. This whimsical installation fosters creativity, movement, and a love of reading – all in one magical setting.

The children’s area is designed with flexibility in mind, enabling a variety of activities such as storytime sessions, homework clubs, author visits, and more. Throughout the space, our shelving system supports face-out book displays for enhanced visibility, and is fully accessible to both children and adults, promoting inclusivity and easy browsing.

Blending Style and Function
In the main library, the sinuous curves of the fluted seating elegantly wrap around structural pillars, forming inviting and comfortable reading nooks. Upholstered in durable, plush fabric, these modular elements encourage both quiet reflection and social interaction, adapting seamlessly to the needs of different users.

The partition between the children’s area and the hireable meeting rooms features vibrant jungle-themed glass manifestations. These not only provide visual delight for children but also ensure privacy and focus within the meeting spaces. Designed in close collaboration with our clients, these custom graphics add personality and purpose, beautifully bridging function and creativity.

Designed for Everyone
Chorlton Library’s inclusive approach is evident throughout, particularly in its signage. Clear, thoughtfully designed visual cues support wayfinding for all visitors, including those with limited English or visual impairments. By prioritising accessible communication, the library fosters a welcoming environment that champions equal access to knowledge and community.

But don’t just take our word for it…
