A new home for books, knowledge and meetings
Dour Library has found a new home within Centre Athéna, a modern, multifunctional hub dedicated to knowledge exchange and innovation. This new facility adheres to rigorous energy and environmental standards while providing an inspiring environment for readers of all ages.
Formerly constrained by space limitations and offering minimal room for activities or lectures, the library enters a transformative phase with its relocation to Centre Athéna. It now transcends its role as a mere book borrowing venue. Alongside an extensive collection, visitors can explore a dedicated reading room, an exhibition space, public workstations and diverse meeting rooms.
Librarian Catherine Dubois underscores the deliberate focus on atmosphere and user experience in the library's design: "The reading room, enveloped in glass, floods with natural light. The lending area's industrial aesthetic, with its cool tones, is complemented by vibrant seating zones that encourage exploration and discovery. Notably, our child-friendly reading corner garners significant attention and acclaim."
The library's spacious and inviting atmosphere beckons visitors to connect, unwind and find inspiration amidst a carefully curated interior. Featuring a blend of straight and curved shelving systems, bespoke furniture for both children and adults and a harmonious colour palette that harmonises with the building's wood and concrete elements, the collection stands out beautifully.
This new venue allows the library to host a broader array of activities and events, solidifying its role as a central cultural hub in Dour's community life.
