From vision to reality

Thedesignconcept worked closely with everyone at Sutton Central library and Sutton Council to ensure the newly refurbished space was everything they imagined…. And more.

From design ideas to 3D drawings and finally to the finished project, we kept close communication with staff to ensure all needs were met and installation ran smoothly.

Sutton Central Library is situated in a building with generous space that was previously underutilised. As well as the library, the space now includes: Family lounge, Sensory play area – designed with autistic users in mind, dedicated teen zone, Art Gallery, Museum. The children’s space now has a sensory area, large porthole style seats embedded into the wall and is the perfect setting for the library’s extremely popular ‘rhyme –time’ events when the space is filled with excited children, ready for the next story.

Now a community hub, the space has been used to its full potential and is a success with students eager to study, local artists who can showcase their own pieces as well as view fellow artists’ work and children spending their day playing/reading while parents relax and keep a watchful eye. The library space itself is now modern and vibrant through the use of colourful graphics and contemporary furniture.

Madeline Barratt, head of libraries, heritage and arts called the refurbishment a labour of love:

“Sutton Central Library is the flagship site for the service and was badly in need of modernisation," she said.
"This is a significant investment by the council in the libraries, heritage and arts service and is a testament to the importance the council places on cultural services. Feedback has been incredibly positive from adults and children alike.
The modern design and new technology is drawing students into the library and our study spaces are regularly full.”

Cllr Steve Penneck, lead councilor for libraries, heritage and arts:

“The re-design will enable staff to deliver the services that customers expect from a 21st Century library, making better use of the space available, and improving accessibility for all customers and drawing in younger people by making use of new technology”
