Flexible library with reuse as a core principle

Aabenraa Library has undergone a comprehensive redesign with a strong focus on reuse, clear zoning, and improved facilities for children and families. After years of incremental adjustments, the library has now been brought together in a single, cohesive interior concept, in which most of the space – including the children’s and young people’s area – has been reimagined.

A key ambition of the project was to create “rooms within the room” in a single-room library, allowing target groups and functions to be understood intuitively. The children’s area has been expanded and designed as an engaging, experience-led environment with local references such as a lighthouse, a reading tree, and artistic installations, while the adult area presents a calmer atmosphere with taller shelving.

The reuse of existing furniture and materials has been a guiding principle throughout the project, combined with professional advice on colour schemes and flexible solutions. The result is a relaxed and functional library that supports both focused study and social interaction.
