Where reading, play, and community unite
At the cultural center in Herblay-sur-Seine, the library’s reading areas, the play areas from the children’s library, and a flexible auditorium merge into a single cohesive whole. The auditorium can be used for events, concerts, and film screenings, while the open, modular layout allows the building to be adapted for a wide range of activities.
Combining reading rooms and play areas with an auditorium is an unconventional solution, and the project’s greatest challenge was therefore to create a natural and harmonious connection between these very different functions. The ambition was to create a lively and welcoming space where all visitors have a unique experience.
The library’s interior features furniture in light, neutral tones, providing a calm atmosphere and highlighting the books, while complementing the building’s wooden structures. These are supplemented by colorful, custom-designed elements that energize the space and clearly define the different zones.
The library staff continuously develop projects in culture, play, and digital activities to bring life to the space. Storytelling performances, film screenings, lectures, workshops, and game nights are organized year-round, making the cultural center an active complement to the city’s other cultural and recreational offerings.
Outside, the cultural center includes a 3,000 m² garden with a vegetable patch, fruit trees, and flowering beds—a green oasis that invites visitors to linger and connect.
