A good place for young users
At Norrtälje library, a new youth department has been designed to attract more young library users.
Frida Bergman, librarian, says:
"In the library, we did not have an allocated space for the age group 13 and up. We had some shelving, but nothing specifically for this particular age group, which also meant that we didn't see them that much in the library. We wanted to change that and with money from the Cultural Council it was possible.
By doing our own research on young people and libraries, we found out what this group wants. Space that is clearly assigned only to this age group, and that feels private with the possibility of being able to retreat, were important prerequisites for creating a good place for young people.
Based on this, we wanted to create an uncluttered space within the room that would feel cosy, and give the impression of being a bit private without really being. We have created a space by framing the department with shelving that are not too high and that you can look through. We wanted to have some supervision over the room, without it being noticeable.
The department got its own colour on the shelving and walls to reinforce that this was its own department. We also wanted to offer a different kind of environment than, for example, an amusement park. We wanted to become an alternative for those looking for a quiet place. We therefore chose swivel chairs with high backs to encourage sitting alone rather than in groups. A reading cave is integrated in one of the shelvings, which should also give a cozy impression and encourage reading."
